Seniors Tackle Local Food Insecurity Through Community Fridge Project
November 02, 2022
What started as a student idea and then a project to address food insecurity in the spring Direct Action class of seniors Theo, Trevor, and Kishi has grown into a community collaboration with Poughkeepsie Public Library District ( PPLD ) and the installation of their first Community Fridge at Adriance Memorial Library! The students have been working hard since May meeting with non-profit leaders, elected officials and community members to find locations for their two donated fridges and we are so grateful for the partnership with the library! Theo, Trevor and Kishi recently installed the fridge and will keep it stocked with weekly generous donations from Poughkeepsie Farm Project, purchases from funds they raise, as well as donations from Oakwood families and community members. They are working with younger students at Oakwood as well in order to keep the project going strong after they graduate.
Donations of fridge and pantry items can be dropped off at the Main Office at Oakwood or directly in the fridge at Adriance. Many thanks to the many individuals and organizations who helped bring this to fruition including the library staff, the Oakwood maintenance crew, Fareground, Awesome Poughkeepsie and Community Matters 2 – “CM2”.
