Oakwood Friends School youth group project to benefit Mural Park

September 13, 2017

Teens from the Hudson Valley and New York City have been working together on a project that will be unveiled this weekend at Mural Park.

Oakwood Friends School in Poughkeepsie is again hosting the Summer Youth Advocacy Program (SYAP), according to a written release from the school. SYAP is a free summer program for low-income, minority youth between the ages of 13 and 18 from the Hudson Valley and New York City.

The annual service learning project, a planter bench and picnic table to be donated to the City of Poughkeepsie, and a spoken word piece will be unveiled this year at Mural Square Park. The group is working in partnership with Councilwoman Ann Perry and the Rotary E-Club of District 7210 on the bench and picnic table project.

A public event is set for 12:30 p.m., Saturday, at Mural Square Park on Main Street in Poughkeepsie.

The mission of the Summer Youth Advocacy Program is to increase understanding of civic engagement, teach the tools of advocacy through the arts, and foster an early interest in and commitment to civic participation.

The program is funded by grants and donations from the Dyson Foundation, M&T Bank, the Rotary E-Club of District 7210, as well as local businesses and individuals.
